Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB.-Atom-Jet Group, in association with the Brandon Wheat Kings are pleased to announce plans to recognize Canadian National Skeleton RacerCassie Elise Hawrysh at this Wednesday's Western Hockey League game against the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors.
Currently in her third season of sliding, Cassie has already carved out a place for herself as one of Canada's top Skeleton racers, rising through the ranks and preparing to compete and challenge the world's best.
The local product capped off a successful 2011-12 racing season this past weekend by clinching a bronze medal at the National Championship at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary. This year's Championship was a two day, 4-heat race (combined time) that featured double digit plus temperatures beating down on the track. While finishing third overall, she did manage to post a Personal Best push time of 5.59 seconds on her first run.
After winning four straight gold medals on the developmental America's Cup (AC) circuit earlier this season, Hawrysh was called up to Team Canada's Europa Cup (EC) tour and while she raced on tracks that she had never seen before, she managed to produce a gold, silver and bronze medal. She ends the 2011-12 season in sixth place within the Canadian women's team and 30th (of 97) in the overall world rankings.
Wednesday's presentation will be made during the second intermission game and the daughter of Ray and Kathy Hawrysh is looking forward to coming home, relaxing and taking in this week's game.
"I want to thank the Wheat Kings, Atom Jet Group and all of the fans who submitted my name for this award," she says. "Being nominated for this prestigious award means just as much to me as being selected a recipient. I am truly proud to call Brandon my hometown and knowing that I am able to make an impact through doing what I love is incredible."
"Skeleton Racing was certainly never on the gym class curriculum when I was in school," Cassie went on to say "but my sturdy athletic foundation was built right here in the Wheat City...and being able to take on the world head-first at 130 km/hr - I am definitely Made in Manitoba."
In addition to receiving theAtom-Jet Group Innovator of the Month Award, Cassie will be signing autographs on the Keystone Centre's Main Concourse during the first intermission.
This marks the eighth season that western Manitoba hockey fans have been given the opportunity to visit the Wheat Kings' official website and nominate coaches, volunteers, athletes and officials for this prestigious award.
Wednesday is also the second and final Rain Check Game of the 2011-12 WHL season, which means any unused ticket can be exchanged at the Keystone Centre box office for this game (regular Ticketmaster agency fees apply). All other tickets can be ordered online at ticketmaster.ca or by calling 726-3555.
History of Skeleton:The first skeleton runs were natural tracks, built in Switzerland in the late 19th Century and capitalized on the recreational popularity of tobogganing. Straight downhill courses were modified by adding curves to make the runs more interesting and challenging. The first official toboggan race was in 1884 and the first known event was 1887. In fact, it was skeleton racing which laid the foundation for the sport of bobsleigh.
