Atlanta United FC News Release
ATLANTA - Atlanta United fell 2-1 to New England Revolution Wednesday night at Gillette Stadium. Atlanta put a season-high 11 shots on target and Machop Chol scored his second goal of the season.
Matthew Polster opened the scoring for New England in the fourth minute. Brooks Lennon headed a clearance towards the top of Atlanta's box, however the ball fell to the Revolution midfielder who hit a low, hard strike into the corner of the goal.
New England doubled its lead in the ninth minute. Carles Gil collected a loose ball in his own half and delivered a long through ball to play Giacomo Vrioni in on goal. The Italian striker dribbled the ball around Brad Guzan for an easy finish.
Atlanta put four shots on target in the first half and created its best opportunity on goal in the 26th minute. Thiago Almada played a long diagonal ball from the left wing to Lennon who was free at the far post, however his first-time shot was straight at Djordje Petrovic. Guzan came up with a crucial save just before halftime, denying a left-footed shot from Vrioni to keep the score 2-0 at the break.
Gonzalo Pineda made two changes at halftime, bringing on Derrick Etienne Jr. and Matheus Rossetto for Tyler Wolff and Santiago Sosa. Almada again tested Petrovic with a shot on goal just minutes into the second half, forcing a diving save from the Serbian goalkeeper. Almada continued to put pressure on New England's back line and found Etienne Jr in space inside the box in the 65th minute but the substitute put his effort wide of the goal.
Atlanta made two more changes in the 69th minute, bringing on Machop Chol and Ozzie Alonso. Atlanta quickly created more opportunities that forced saves from Petrovic, including a header from Chol, a shot from the top of the box from Almada and a header by Juanjo Purata that the goalkeeper cleared off the line. Substitute Edwin Mosquera curled an effort from the right side of the box on frame in stoppage time to force another save from Petrovic, who finished the match with 10 saves.
In the final minute of stoppage time, Atlanta found the breakthrough as Chol stole the ball inside the box from Andrew Farrell and smashed a left-footed shot into the top corner from close range to prevent the clean sheet for New England.
Atlanta United (9-6-8, 35 points) returns to action when it hosts Orlando City SC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, July 15 (7:30 p.m. EDT, MLS Season Pass, FS1, FOX Deportes, 92.9 The Game, La Mejor).
