Atlanta United 2 News Release
KENNESAW, Ga. - Atlanta United 2 picked up a 1-1 draw against the Charleston Battery on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Bank Stadium. Amadou Macky Diop scored for the second consecutive match.
Both teams went on the attack in the opening minutes, with Macky Diop having the best Atlanta chance in the eighth minute. Amir Bashti played a nice cross from the left that Macky Diop connected with six yards from goal, but his header went just over the bar.
Later in the half, Baboucarr Njie tried a curling effort from 25 yards out that went inches over the bar. Phillip Goodrum had another good opportunity right before the break when a Coleman Gannon cross fell to him at the top of the box, but his left-footed shot whistled by the left post. The match remained scoreless heading into halftime.
The second half opened with Ben Lundgaard making a couple of diving saves to keep Charleston off the scoreboard. The breakthrough for ATL UTD 2 came in the 67th minute. Goodrum chipped a beautiful pass over the Charleston backline to an open Macky Diop. The striker took a touch and hit a low right-footed shot into the bottom left corner from the top of the box to give Atlanta the 1-0 lead.
The lead lasted until the final attack of the match. Charleston's Mauro Cichero scored from six yards out after Nicque Daley redirected a cross into his path in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
ATL UTD 2 (1-3-2, 5 points) returns to action Saturday, Aug. 8 when they travel to Birmingham Legion FC (7:30 p.m., ESPN+).
