Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Atlanta, GA- The Silverbacks failed to make a sweep of division rivals this weekend, falling 2-1 to the visiting Richmond Kickers at DeKalb Memorial Stadium, Sunday.
Jordy Broder was at the center of a controversial first half in which the midfielder was red carded and gave away the penalty that led to Richmond's winning goal.
Atlanta remains in fourth place in the Eastern Conference following the loss; Richmond, with 43 points, stay ahead in third place.
Richmond stormed into the lead in the second minute following a slip up by Silverbacks defender Fred Degand. Looking to play a short pass, Degand's effort was intercepted by Matthew Delicate, who caught Atlanta's back line off guard with a cross to the unmarked Kevin Jeffrey to score from close range.
Playing a neat possesion game, the Kickers threatened Atlanta's goal in the early stages yet failed to capitalize on early chances. By contrast, the Silverbacks struggled at the start and didn't look sharp until the second half.
Jordy Broder, a player who fell on the wrong side of the referee the last time these teams met, was again in trouble after 22 minutes, receiving a yellow card and giving away a penalty following a challenge on Joey Worthen. Jeffrey sent Joe Barton the wrong way on the penalty kick for the second goal.
With the halftime whistle only moments away, Broder was dismissed following a deliberate handball, leaving Atlanta with a mountain to climb.
Despite the setback, the Silverbacks played with a higher tempo and struck back after 53 minutes. Philipe Godoy, coming in for Adilson DeLima who limped off after 20 minutes, was awarded a penalty following a foul by a Richmond defender. Mac Cozier hit the spot kick straight at Ronnie Pascale, but was fortunate to see the ball rebound back into his path. He made no mistake with the second opportunity.
The Kickers however, did not suffer the same sequence of events from two weeks ago when Atlanta rallied from two down short a player, surviving a few nervy moments to hold on for the win.
