New Jersey Cardinals News Release
This evening at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey, the New Jersey Cardinals (19-20) fell to the Staten Island Yankees (New York Yankees), 6-5, in 16 innings. Tim Cantu (0-1), normally a second baseman for the Cardinals, took the loss, and David Cuen (2-1) earned the win for the Yankees (14-24). Michael Martinez worked a scoreless 16th for his 4th save of the season.
After falling behind 5-1 in the 3rd, the Cardinals rallied to tie the score. Sean Dobson led off with a hit-by-pitch, Chris Patrick followed with an RBI double and Steve Sherman an RBI single. Then, with one out, Wes Swackhamer drove in two more with a double to center. And then a pitchers duel of epic proportions began.
Neither team scored a run from the 3rd inning until the 16th, when the Yankees pushed across an unearned run. But thats certainly not to say the game wasnt exciting. In the 9th, the Cardinals recorded 3 hits and a sacrifice bunt, yet still managed to not put a runner past second base. Then, in the 14th the Yankees loaded the bases and reliever Austin Tubb stranded everyone. Finally, in the bottom of the 14th, the Cards had the bases loaded and one out, but a ground ball double play killed the threat.
On the night, Patrick picked up 4 hits in 6 at-bats, and Dobson, Sherman and Jake Mullinax all chipped in two. Relievers Adam Acosta, Jackson Paz, Michael Sillman, Cory Doyne and Tubb all recorded scoreless outings. In all, the Cardinals pitched 13 consecutive innings without allowing a run to score.
The Cards continue their 3-game set tomorrow night at Staten Island and return home on Tuesday at 7:15 pm for the finale with the Staten Island Yankees. On Wednesday, New Jersey travels to Oneonta (Detroit Tigers) to open a 3-game series with the Tigers and then travel to Brooklyn (New York Mets) on Saturday. The club returns home on Sunday, August 8, against the Cyclones. Tuesday night there is a post-game party at the Hampton House Bar & Grill, and Sunday there will be a poster giveaway and Kids Race Around the Bases.
