Atlanta Dream News Release
ATLANTA - The Atlanta Dream have announced the re-signing of unrestricted free agent Matee Ajavon. Per team policy, terms of the contracts are not disclosed.
"I am very happy to be back with the Atlanta Dream," Ajavon said. "There is no other team I would rather battle with in a quest for a WNBA Championship."
The eight-year veteran split time last season at both the point and shooting guard positions for Atlanta. Ajavon appeared in a total of 33 games for the Dream in 2015, while making 11 starts and posting averages of 5.9 points, 2.4 assists and 1.8 steals. Her field goal percentage of .405 (66-for-163) was the highest single-season clip of her career. Ajavon tied for sixth among WNBA league leaders last season with 47 steals.
Ajavon was originally acquired by Atlanta via trade from Washington during the 2014 offseason. She was a first-round draft pick (No. 5 overall) of the Houston Comets in the 2008 WNBA Draft following a collegiate career at Rutgers. She guided the Scarlet Knights to a mark of 109-32 during her time in Piscataway.
Ajavon is currently competing overseas for Energa Torun in Poland. She ranks second on the squad with a 13.7 points per game clip in addition to pacing the squad with team-best averages of 4.5 assists and 2.4 steals. Ajavon has also connected on a team-high 46 free throws while seeing action in 14 games.
The Dream will open the 2016 regular season at the San Antonio Stars on Saturday, May 14. Atlanta's home opener at Philips Arena will take place on Sunday, May 22 vs. the Chicago Sky in a 3 p.m. ET tip.
