Clearwater Threshers News Release

Willians Astudillo homered and knocked home four runs on Saturday night, pacing the Threshers offense in a 7-6 Independence Day victory over the Brevard County Manatees at Space Coast Stadium.

Clearwater (8-2) managed to fight off a late Manatees surge as the Threshers picked up their Florida State League-best eighth victory in the second half.

Yacksel Rios (4-2) earned the win, after holding Brevard County (3-6) to just three runs - one earned - on only three hits in his six innings. The right-hander issued two walks and racked up four strikeouts.

The Threshers struck early against starter Cy Sneed (0-1), who was making his Florida State League debut. With the bases loaded and two outs in the first, Astudillo delivered a single to center to plate Carlos Tocci and Rhys Hoskins for the 2-0 lead.

After the Manatees got one back in the second, Astudillo struck again in the fourth. With Chace Numata aboard following a one-out single, Astudillo lifted his third home run of the season out to left for a two-run shot, increasing the lead to 4-1.

Brevard County kept it close, rallying for a pair of runs in the bottom half. Clearwater though was able to tack on insurance runs in each of the next three innings, thanks to RBI singles by Hoskins, Chase Harris, and Numata.

With Clearwater ahead 7-3, the Manatees mounted one last threat in the seventh.

Brevard County managed to plate three runs on three hits and a hit batsman against Miguel Nunez, and after a walk to Garrett Cooper put the tying run in scoring position, Jesen Therrien entered in relief. A wild pitch moved both runners up 90 feet, but Therrien was able to get Cameron Garfield to fly out to right to end the threat.

Ulises Joaquin worked around a leadoff error in the ninth inning to keep the Manatees off the board and lock down his ninth save.

The series will continue on Sunday as the Threshers call upon David Whitehead (5-6) to face off against Wei-Chung Wang (5-2). First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m.
