Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL (July 5, 2015) - The first two games of this series between the Stone Crabs and Cardinals have run the gamut of highs and lows. In Saturday night's opener, the teams played before the largest crowd of the season at Charlotte Sports Park as the Cardinals escaped with a 2-1 win. The ballpark was a bit quieter on Sunday afternoon, and a tough day on the mound resulted in a 10-0 shutout that sent the 'Crabs to their fourth straight loss for just the second time this season.
Palm Beach got on the board in the first for the second straight day as they started with a leadoff bunt single from center fielder CJ McElroy. He stole second base after narrowly beating the throw from Armando Araiza, and advanced to third on Danny Diekroeger's groundout to second. Brett Wiley worked the count to 2-2, and sent a deep flyball to left for his 16th run batted and a 1-0 Cardinals lead.
The second inning began the day's bizarre events when Collin Radack drew a leadoff walk. The next pitch from Marquez plunked Blake Drake, and a sacrifice bunt from Casey Turgeon put runners at second and third with just one out. A four pitch walk to catcher Jose Gonzalez loaded the bases, and Michael Massi's grounder to third was thrown off line when Jace Conrad gunned to the plate. The error made it 2-0, and McElroy's groundout to first added another run without the benefit of a base hit.
Gonzalez opened the fourth with his first home run of the season on a moonshot to left and Wiley later opened the fifth with a double on Marquez' first offering. Voit grounded out to third, and Radack lifted another sacrifice fly to left for a 5-0 lead and the end of the road for Marquez (4-8). On the flipside, the Cardinals got six shutout innings from their starter for the second straight day as Luke Weaver (2-4) scattered just four singles and a walk while striking out four.
Eduar Quinonez made his way out for the fifth after getting the final out in the fourth. He walked Turgeon on a 3-2 pitch and got Gonzalez to hit a hard grounder wide of third for Conrad, who stabbed the hot shot but couldn't hang on. Another walk to Massi loaded the bases for McElroy, who got credited with his second run batted in after drawing another walk to make it 6-0. Diekroeger added a run with a fielder's choice groundout up the middle, and Wiley's roller to short was misplayed by Pat Blair for an error and an 8-0 Stone Crabs hole. Voit then singled Diekroeger home with a shot into left that rolled past Granden Goetzman and resulted in Wiley scoring on the error to make it 10-0.
Charlotte got two singles apiece from Kean Wong and Yoel Araujo at the plate, while Mike Marjama extended his hitting streak to 11 straight with a single in the sixth. Starting in the eighth, Marjama took over on the mound after Brad Schreiber fired 1.2 hitless IP following Quinonez. In his first professional pitching appearance, Marjama looked strong and went 1-2-3 in both innings to put the game to bed. The Stone Crabs matched season highs with four errors and eight walks allowed, and actually outhit the Cardinals 7-5.
