As Title Defense Begins, Banner Unveiling Put on Hold
November 13, 2020 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Chicago Steel News Release
GENEVA, ILLINOIS - Under normal circumstances, Opening Night following a championship of any kind is a time for fans to celebrate. The circumstances as the Steel get set to start the 2020-2021 season, however, are anything but normal.
This Saturday, November 14, the Steel will open the regular season at home against the Muskegon Lumberjacks without any fans in the building. Current State of Illinois guidelines prohibit spectators for Steel home games and as a result, the team has decided to hold off unveiling the first Anderson Cup Championship banner in team history.
"Our fans play an important role in our success and it wouldn't feel right unveiling a banner without them," said Steel President Dan Lehv. "Opening Night following our 2016-2017 Clark Cup Championship was one of the most special nights in the history of the Steel. The 2019-2020 team was on pace to break or challenge nearly every Steel and USHL record and our fans deserve the chance to celebrate and honor the players and staff that were a part of it."
As Steel fans await the opportunity to return to the arena, the team will provide all season ticket holders with a replica of the Anderson Cup Championship banner that they can hang in their own homes. The banner at Fox Valley Ice Arena will remain covered until the Steel are once again permitted to host fans.
Following the cancellation of the final six weeks of 2019-2020 regular season and playoffs due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Steel were awarded the club's first Anderson Cup title as the League's regular season champions. The Clark Cup, the League's ultimate prize given to the playoff champion, was not awarded.
Puck drop this Saturday night is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
