Armor Take Down D-Fenders

Springfield Armor News Release


Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield Armor, presented by MGM Springfield, defeated the Los Angeles D-Fenders 98-89 today at the MassMutual Center. The Armor improve to 2-1 with the victory, while the D-Fenders suffered their first loss of the season and drop to 2-1.

Springfield used strong efforts on the glass and on the defensive end to shake Los Angeles. The Armor held the D-Fenders to 36% shooting (32-89) after Los Angeles had connected on 48% in its previous two games combined. Springfield also established a new franchise record with 63 rebounds (23 on the offensive end) and out-rebounded the D-Fenders 63-43 on the day.

Armor forward Shawn Taggart came off the bench to lead the way with 21 points (13-16 FT) and Cliff Tucker tallied his first double-double of the season (12 points, 11 rebounds). James Mays posted his third double-double in as many games with 18 points and 10 rebounds, Carleton Scott contributed 8 points and 10 rebounds and Chas McFarland added 10 points in the victory.

D-Fenders' guard Courtney Fortson led all scorers with 26 points, Orien Greene added 18 points and 6 steals, Jarrid Famous scored 14 points, Los Angeles Lakers' assignee Darius Johnson-Odom recorded11 points and 7 assists and Jamario Moon and Gary Flowers each contributed 10 points to round out the double digit scorers.

The Armor return to action on Friday evening when they host the Fort Wayne Mad Ants at 7:00 pm at the MassMutual Center. The Armor are still collecting new, unwrapped toys in conjunction with Kmart (1277 Liberty St. in Springfield) through next weekend's games. All of the toys will be donated to Baystate Children's Hospital and each donor will receive a free ticket voucher to Springfield's game against the Santa Cruz Warriors on Saturday, Jan. 26. The D-Fenders will have a day off before heading to Bakersfield to take on the Jam on Tuesday.
