Springfield Armor News Release
SPRINGFIELD, MA - The Springfield Armor lost to the Austin Toros Saturday night at the MassMutual Center, 114-98. A crowd of 3,169 saw Springfield lose their second in a row to Austin and their sixth straight overall.
New arrival Justin Hawkins scored his first points for the Armor on a three pointer early in the second quarter, one of four triples for Springfield in the first half. Both teams shot well in the half, Springfield at 51.4% and Austin at 52.4%. Toros forward Malik Hairston keyed a 9-2 Austin run to end the first half and Springfield went into the break trailing 58-49.
Austin attacked Springfield's transition defense at every opportunity in the third quarter as the Toros wings leaked out early for fastbreak buckets. Springfield struggled to contain guard Curtis Jerrells (20 points) and center Dwayne Jones (17 points, 15 rebounds) and Austin's lead would grow to as large as 20. Never able to put together a consistent run against the Toros stingy defense, Springfield fell by a score of 114-98.
Springfield (5-21) was led by Morris Almond's 23 points. TJ Cummings added 19. Hairston, ejected after receiving his second technical foul, finished with 24 for Austin (17-10).
Springfield will take on Austin this Monday, February 8th at 7 p.m. in their Mardi Gras Celebration. Tickets are still on sale and can be purchased by logging on to www.armorhoops.com or by visiting the MassMutual Center Box Office. Box Office hours are Monday through Friday, 9-5, Saturday, 10 to game time.
