QMJHL Halifax Mooseheads

Armada Stage Comeback in OT Defeat of Halifax

November 29, 2023 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Halifax Mooseheads News Release

It was an annual homecoming for many members of the Mooseheads who suited up in front of a large crowd of family and friends in the Montreal suburb of Blainville-Boisbriand on Wednesday night, but it was Jonathan Fauchon and the Armada who stole the show in a 5-4 overtime win over Halifax.

The 19-year-old Fauchon scored his third goal of the game with just 42 seconds remaining in the overtime period when he finished off an odd-man rush to complete a comeback for the home squad. The Mooseheads had built up a 4-2 lead early in the second period with Jordan Dumais and Brady Schultz both figuring into all four goals. They scored once each and added three assists and it looked like the Herd might be well on their way to a 20th victory on the season but Blainville had plenty of offensive pressure of their own in a game that was a bit wide open and unstructured at times.

Blainville put 41 shots on goalie Mathis Rousseau who gave up a season high five goals in the defeat. Halifax has now dropped three of their last four games, including two in overtime, after they had a 10-game winning streak snapped last Thursday at Scotiabank Centre.

Overage forward Brody Fournier got the scoring started 4:22 into the game when he connected on a power play with Dumais and Schultz getting the helpers. That assist was the 200th of Dumais' QMJHL career, making him the first Mooseheads player to ever reach the milestone. Halifax was lethal on the power play throughout the night and cashed in on another man advantage about eight minutes later when Schultz fired home a one-timer from the bottom of the circle off another great feed by Dumais. Blainville showed that they wouldn't back down and tied the game 2-2 on goals less than two minutes apart from Fauchon and Mateo Nobert late in the period. The Nobert goal was the first power play goal the Mooseheads had allowed in 16 games, dating back to October 20th. It was a eventful opening 20 minutes and the scoring wasn't done there as Dumais beat the buzzer with his 13th goal of the season at the 19:58 mark to put the Moose back in front 3-2.

Halifax restored the two-goal advantage early in the second period when Dumais threaded a perfect pass onto the awaiting stick of Mathieu Cataford at the side of the net to make it 4-2 for the third power play goal in three chances but that was it for the Mooseheads offense. The Armada took over from there and chipped away at the deficit. Fauchon cut the Halifax lead to one with a breakaway goal for his second of the night to make it a 4-3 game after 40 minutes. The Fauchon assisted on the tying goal from Emanuelson Charbonneau-Joseph a little passed the midway mark of the third period which forced overtime. Blainville ended the game on an odd-man rush after a Dumais turnover inside the Armada blueline, springing Theo Lemieux and Fauchon on a two-on-one.

Goalie Charles-Edward Gravel earned the win in front of 2,302 fans with 29 saves on 33 shots. Halifax was 3-for-5 on the power play while Blainville was 1-for-4.

Dumais is now alone in second in the QMJHL scoring race with a remarkable 41 points in 17 games played while Schultz is second in points by a defenceman in the QMJHL with 22 points and leads all blueliners with 20 assists.

The road trip continues in Val d'Or on Friday and Rouyn-Noranda on Saturday. Both of those games are 8pm AST starts. The next home game for the Herd is Thursday, December 7th against Drummondville. Halifax will also host Gatineau on Friday, December 8th. Tickets are on sale now at Ticketmaster.ca.
