PINE BLUFF - The Arkansas RiverCatz added a familiar face to their American Basketball Association (ABA) roster Thursday with the signing of former Arkansas Razorback and Arkansas RimRocker standout Kareem Reid.

Reid, 31, also participated in his first practice with the RiverCatz on Thursday, though his new coach, Ed Corporal, already knew what he was getting with the lightning-quick, 5-11 guard. Corporal was an assistant coach with the RimRockers when Reid led the team to the ABA title in 2005 and was later named the Final Game MVP.

"It was good having him here and getting reacquainted with him," Corporal said. "He is definitely a big asset to the team. He's a tremendous player and leader. I expect big things from us with Kareem out there."

RiverCatz general manager Keith Newton said getting Reid on the squad is a coup for the Pine Bluff team, which is set to begin its inaugural season in the ABA.

"Kareem brings a lot of energy and leadership to the floor," Newton said. "He does a great job bringing out the best in his teammates. We're very fortunate to have a player of his caliber."

Reid finished his collegiate career with the Razorbacks in 1999, having left the school as the all-time leader in assists with 748. Reid earned second-team All-SEC honors as a sophomore and was named to the league's All-Freshman team after the 1995-96 season.

Reid's stops after leaving the Razorbacks included the CBA, the Harlem Globetrotters and the USBL before joining the RimRockers from 2004-06.

The RiverCatz are set to open their season Friday, Nov. 3 against Monterrey Veneno in a contest slated for the Pine Bluff Convention Center.
