Toronto Argonauts News Release
Toronto - This Thursday, June 20 at 7:00 p.m., the Toronto Argonauts will kick off their home pre-season game against the Montreal Alouettes in historic fashion when, for the first time in 55 years, a CFL football game will be played at the hallowed grounds of Varsity Stadium in downtown Toronto.
For one game only, Argos fans will conjure up memories of greats like Joe "King" Krol, Les Ascott and Ulysses "Crazy Legs" Curtis as they watch modern day heroes "The Professor" Ricky Ray, "The Flyin' Hawaiian" Chad Owens, and 100th Grey Cup MVP "Kack Attack" Chad Kackert take the field at the place that hosted 30 Grey Cup championships, including nine Toronto Grey Cup wins. The Argonauts are 1-0 in pre-season action in 2013 after defeating the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 24-6 on the road last week.
Reminiscent of football games of times past when the crowd could almost reach out and touch the players, fans will fill the stands then pour out onto the track and line the field! Also in attendance will be the MVP of the 1950 Grey Cup Mud Bowl game played at Varsity Stadium, Nick Volpe. During the game, the videoboard will take fans back in time and re-live the 'good old days' at Varsity Stadium through a series of vignettes.
Fans will be entertained at halftime by local pop/dance music sensation Zolo who will perform two of his hit songs, "Feel It" and "Vacating Love". The 2013 Argos Cheerleaders, presented by the Toronto Sun, will keep the crowd on their feet throughout the game, and 2013 Argonauts merchandise and 100th Grey Cup championship gear will be available for purchase on the concourse at special season ticket holder pricing.
On June 19, during the Argonauts' day before game team walk through which has been moved to Varsity Stadium to celebrate this special occasion, nearly 700 students from GTA schools have been invited to participate in Camp with the Champs. During the camp, Argos staff will educate the students on the game of football followed by player autographs and a 45 minute mini-fitness circuit led by members of Argonauts alumni and the University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team.
The club has opened up a special block of tickets for this pre-season game which are general admission - standing room only - on field level, and are priced at just $30.00 each. Quantities are limited but tickets can be purchased through ticketmaster.ca, by calling 416-341-ARGO (2746) or by visiting the Varsity Stadium box office on game day.
Fans are then invited to join Argos players and cheerleaders at the Official Post-Game Party at Shoeless Joe's Sports Grill at 276 King Street West, for special food and drink deals!
