Toronto Argonauts News Release

Toronto – The Toronto Argonauts Football Club is thrilled to announce that it has signed defensive coordinator Richard Stubler to a two year deal. Stubler is a key weapon in the Argonauts' coaching arsenal and helped lead the team to its 2004 Grey Cup victory.

Known for his keen defensive strategies, Stubler's acclaimed defence kept its opponents scoreless for an astounding four games this past season. Coach Stubler also adjusted his defence at the start of the season to allow linebacker Kevin Eiben to start. Eiben went on to lead the CFL in defensive tackles and was named the East Division's Most Outstanding Canadian.

Commented Coach Stubler, "It's fun to be back with what I consider to be the best team in the League alongside the best head coach in the League, in the best city in the League with the best owners in the League."

Head Coach Michael "Pinball" Clemons enthused, "The first thing that comes to mind is phenomenal. For me, Rich has been my mentor and has been the person I've trusted and depended on most in my short tenure as coach. We have had many heart to hearts and he has consistently come through for me. He understands what I believe in and not only agrees with it but champions it. Great defence underlines the name Rich Stubler but character is the exclamation point."

Adam Rita, Toronto Argonauts' Vice President of Football Operations, commented, "I'm very excited to have Rich back. We have worked together in the past and we have the magic as far as Grey Cup games are concerned. We won together in 1993 in Edmonton, 2000 in B.C. and now 2004 with the Argonauts. He is a consistent coach, a good leader and knows what he wants out of his players. His defence is extremely productive and I can't wait to see what he has planned for 2005."

Added CFL All-Star safety Orlondo Steinauer, "Coach Stubler is the mastermind behind our defence. When you talk about vital parts in keeping a championship team, it starts with the coach and to have him back is the integral part. This is the start we need to get the Cup back. He is a tireless worker who cares about his players. We are a family and he is like our dad. He cares about us more than football – he cares about our lives and that is an awesome feeling."

Coach Stubler is available for in-person and phone interviews this afternoon. A biography on Richard Stubler is available at: www.argonauts.ca/Argos/Team/ClubDirectory/stubler_rich.html
