Toronto Argonauts News Release

Toronto - The Toronto Argonauts are preparing to do battle with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats as they open the 2006 season at home this Saturday. Kickoff is at 3:00 p.m. at Rogers Centre as the battle to get to the Grey Cup game in Winnipeg in November officially begins. The ultimate Double Blue Weekend continues on Sunday as the Argos rally for a cause close to their hearts at the Stop The Violence Walk and post-walk rally at 1:30 p.m. at Nathan Phillips Square.

The fun will begin well before the doors open as the pre-game Steelback Streetfest starts at 11:00 a.m. on Bremner St. on the south side of Rogers Centre. The party will feature fun for the whole family including current Argos, Argo alumni, legendary coach Leo Cahill and the Blue Thunder Cheerleaders, as well as a beer garden, food from Lick's and Popeye's, interactive activities and musical performances. Fans can test their luck at the Bowmans.com tent with a quick game of Texas Hold'em and a chance to win a 42" DLP TV, as well as trying out the latest in exercise equipment, courtesy of Advantage Fitness. Additionally, CBC TV will broadcast their first 2006 CFL on CBC show with new host Elliotte Friedman from outside of Gate 5 beginning at 2:00 p.m.

The game theme is Super "Hero" Day presented by The Toronto Star and will feature a pre-game highlight honouring retired Toronto Argonauts Adrion "Pee Wee" Smith and Noah Cantor, both of whom will be present at the ceremony. Police officers, EMS workers, fire fighters and members of the military will be saluted as part of the Super "Hero" fan tunnel. Kick off duties will be handled by Toronto Police Association President Dave Wilson and Stop The Violence Youth Committee Member Junior Bernard, both of whom will be taking part in Sunday's Walk. The anthem will be sung by none other than Diane Clemons, wife of Head Coach Michael "Pinball" Clemons.

Though the roof of Rogers Centre will be closed for the special home opener pre-game ceremonies beginning at 2:30 p.m., it is expected that the roof will be open for the game. Following the game, the Argonauts will See You On The Field as fans can come down on the field post-game to meet their favourite Argo players, cheerleaders and Jason the mascot. Juno Award winning half-time performer George Canyon will also be participating in See You On The Field. Fans will receive one of 3000 mini-posters of the film Superman Returns, courtesy of Warner Brothers when they leave the game. Superman Returns will be highlighted throughout the game as part of the Super "Hero" theme. As well, the official Steelback Post Game Party will be hosted on the main floor at Forget About It, 325 King Street West, immediately following the game.

Sunday's Stop The Violence Walk, in partnership with the Toronto Police Association, will feature Argo players and coaches, as well as concerned community members and groups, all uniting to raise awareness and funds for this important issue. Many entertainers have donated their talents to this free walk and post-walk rally, including jacksoul, Edwin, The Salads, Bless, DJ Dopey, DJ Spence Diamonds and dance troupe 2 Badd.

The Toronto Argonauts are North America's oldest professional football club, having celebrated their 130th anniversary in 2003. The Toronto Argonauts have 15 Grey Cup championships to their credit.
