Argonauts Will Pick 7th Overall in the 2021 CFL Draft
TORONTO - The Toronto Argonauts were awarded the seventh pick in the first round of the 2021 CFL Draft during a draft lottery Saturday night. The date of the draft is still to be determined but will be held in the Spring. "We expect to be picking late in the first round like this for years to come," said Argos General Manager Michael Clemons. "Success on the field is measured by playoff appearances and Grey Cup championships and a product of that every Spring is late round draft selections. That is our goal. That is our mindset."
Due to the cancellation of the 2020 CFL season, a tweaking of the draft process needed to occur since win-loss records were not able to determine an order. A random draw was established that was equally weighted across the nine CFL teams to determine the first round. After that, the draft will have a "snake" format, meaning after teams pick in the first round, they will then pick in reverse order in the second round and the pattern continues as such.
Toronto will have seven selections during the draft, one in each round plus an additional fourth round pick which was acquired from the B.C. Lions via the Shawn Lemon trade in 2019. ARGOS 2021 CFL DRAFT PICKS Round Pick 1 7 2 3 (12) 3 7 (25) 4 3 (30) 4 6 (33) 5 7 (43) 6 3 (48)
The 2021 CFL Draft will be six rounds long instead of the traditional eight rounds. This is in recognition of the fact that 2021 CFL training camps will feature a "double cohort" of Canadian rookies, with a group from each of the 2020 and 2021 CFL Drafts. There will be no territorial selections in the 2021 CFL Draft.
