Daytona Tortugas News Release

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Daytona Cubs (31-32) inch closer to the five-hundred mark as they take game two against the Lakeland Flying Tigers (33-29) by the score of 5-4. The Cubs' offense scored all five runs in the first five innings and look to sweep the Flying Tigers in the series finale Wednesday night.

The Cubs got on the board first thanks to one of three Lakeland miscues. Right fielder Kyler Burke singled to start the inning. Catcher Michael Brenly reached on a one-out single to put runners at first and second. Left fielder David Macias then bounced one to shortstop Gustavo Nunez. The slick-fielding shortstop had it go off the end of his glove and into center field to allow Burke to score.

Daytona used another Lakeland error in the third inning to extend the lead. First baseman Rebel Ridling singled off of Flying Tigers starter Charlie Furbush (4-5) with two outs. Ridling then moved up two bases on a strike-three wild pitch to Kyler Burke. Designated hitter Smailey Borges came up with runners on the corners and rolled one up the middle to second baseman Alden Carrithers. The diminutive second baseman made his second error of the night and allowed Ridling to score.

The Cubs made it 3-0 with an earned run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Shortstop Junior Lake tripled to center field with one out to set the table for center fielder Brett Jackson. The Cubs All-Star singled through the right side of the infield for his 13th RBI in the last seven games.

Cubs starter Chris Archer (5-1) was dominant through the first four innings as he did not allow a run and struck out seven. He ran into a little trouble in the top of the fifth inning though as designated hitter Billy Nowlin and Gustavo Nunez got the inning started with back-to-back singles. Archer struck out the next two batters, but gave up a two-run double to Alden Carrithers to pull the Tigers within one run.

The Cubs came right back in the bottom half of the fifth inning to plate two runners of their own. With one out in the inning Kyler Burke singled to right centerfield and Smailey Borges followed Burke up uith a double down the left field line. Michael Brenly brought Burke and Borges home with a single to right field. The Cubs accumulated four hits in a row in the inning and extended their lead back to three runs.

The Flying Tigers would not take long to put a few runs back on the scoreboard as they scored two more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Kody Kaiser jacked his fifth homerun of the season to lead off the inning off of starting pitcher Chris Archer. A Francisco Martinez double and an error brought home the second run of the inning for Lakeland.

The offense stopped for both teams for the remainder of the ballgame as Cubs relief was stellar in this contest. James Leverton saw action in his first game as a Daytona Cub in the 2010 season as he threw an inning and two-thirds of scoreless baseball. The southpaw was a starter in Daytona last year and has turned into an effective reliever in the Cubs organization in 2010. Mike Perconte shut the door for Daytona with a two inning save and Perconte's third of the season.

The series finally against the Lakeland Flying Tigers will take place Wednesday night with a first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Cubs look to sweep the series on another Radiology Associates Wednesday. This Wednesday will be a little different as it will be $1 item night with a new promotion starting. Hotdogs, small fountain drinks, popcorn, and of course ice cream treats will be one dollar all night long thanks to Radiology Associates.
