AquaSox' Winning Streak Snapped in 7-4 Loss
September 9, 2023 - Northwest League (NWL)
Everett AquaSox News Release
EVERETT, WA: The Everett AquaSox saw their five-game winning streak snapped by the Eugene Emeralds on Saturday 7-4. The Emeralds scored at least one run in five of the first six innings of the game, and their bullpen was stellar in the latter half of the game.
The Emeralds matched their run total from the last two games combined in the first inning on Saturday, when they pushed across a run on a fielder's choice. Unfortunately for Eugene, this lead would not even survive the first inning.
Harry Ford set the near-sellout crowd of 3,495 on fire when he doubled home Victor Labrada to tie the game at one. Ford would later score on an RBI from Northwest League RBI leader Hogan Windish, giving Everett a 2-1 lead.
Everett would score another in the second inning on a Ford bases load walk. This would ultimately chase Eugene starter Seth Corry from the game early after only 1.1 innings, where he surrendered three runs on four hits. Eric Silva took over and pitched through a bases-loaded one-out jam to maintain the 3-1 score.
After limiting the damage in the second, Eugene responded by tying it up in the third. Luis Toribio mashed a two-run home run over the center field wall to make it a 3-3 game. The Emeralds completed their comeback in the fourth, scoring two more on a Brett Auerbach RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Grant McCray.
Eugene's bullpen started throwing down zeroes in the third and kept that scoreless streak going through the sixth. Meanwhile, their offense kept scoring. By the time the bottom of the seventh came around, it was 7-3 Emeralds. This is when Everett finally got to Emeralds' reliever Tanner Kiest after he put up 2.2 scoreless innings, getting a run on a Eugene throwing error. The Emeralds would go to Cam Cotter to get out of the jam and keep the game at a 7-4 score.
Cotter would remain in the game the rest of the way and shut things down for his first save of the season Eugene. Everett will host the first two games of the 2023 Northwest League Playoffs on Tuesday, September 12th and Wednesday, September 13th against the Vancouver Canadians. Both games are presented by the Leavitt Group Northwest Insurance and will begin at 7:05.
