Everett AquaSox News Release
EVERETT, Wash. - The Everett AquaSox will play for the 2010 Northwest League Championship after winning the Western Division pennant Tuesday night 3-1 over the Vancouver Canadians at a wet and chilly Everett Memorial Stadium. The Sox win the best of three Divisional Series 2-0.
The AquaSox advance to the Northwest League Championship Series to face the Spokane Indians, who defeated the Yakima Bears in the Eastern Division Finals two games to none. The Frogs will compete for their first championship since 1985.
Anthony Fernandez (1-0, 0.00 ERA) earned the win for the Sox with six strong innings of work, striking out a season-high eight batters and giving up six hits while walking four. Nathan Long (0-1, 5.40 ERA) took the loss for Vancouver.
Fernandez struck out a pair to get out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the first and was given a run in the bottom of the frame for his efforts. Robbie Anston led off with his third double of the series, advanced to third on sacrifice bunt by Terry Serrano and raced home on a sacrifice fly to right by Kevin Mailloux.
The Sox manufactured two more runs in the second thanks to three singles and a walk, with RBI-hits from Kalian Sams and Anston giving the Sox a 3-0 lead. Evan Sharpley had drawn a one-out walk and advanced to third on a Steven Baron single to set up the scoring.
As a steady rain continued to fall on Everett Memorial Stadium, Fernandez continued to work out of tough situations, allowing a runner to reach at least second base in five of his six innings of work but not giving up a run. Fernandez was aided by some great defensive plays and a rowdy crowd of 1,207 fans who braved the wet and chilly temperatures to fervently cheer the AquaSox on to victory.
The Canadians rallied for a run in the top of the seventh inning off reliever Willy Kesler thanks to an error and a run-scoring double play. Kesler worked out of a two-on jam in the eighth to set up Tyler Burgoon, who recorded the biggest save of his career by striking out the side in the ninth inning.
The AquaSox will take on the Spokane Indians, who defeated the Yakima Bears in Game 2 of the Eastern Division Finals 6-1 Tuesday night, in Game 1 of the Championship Series Thursday at 6:35 p.m. at Avista Stadium in Spokane.
Everett is scheduled to host Game 2 Saturday night at 7:05 at Everett Memorial Stadium. The Sox will also host Game 3, if necessary, on Sunday at 6:05 p.m. at Everett Memorial Stadium. The Frogs went 4-6 against the Indians during the regular season.
