WHL Brandon Wheat Kings

April 25 Preview: Pats vs Wheat Kings 9 PM

April 25, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

The Brandon Wheat Kings (17-3-2-0) face the Regina Pats (9-10-2-1) tonight with the Wheat Kings on the verge of clinching the East Division banner. After Braden Schneider scored the overtime winner on Saturday to beat the Prince Albert Raiders 5-4, the Wheat Kings moved back into a three-point lead atop the division, officially eliminating the Saskatoon Blades from catching up in the standings. It's not only the provincial rival Winnipeg ICE who can catch the Wheat Kings now, should the Wheat Kings fail to pick up a point over the Pats or the Blades on Wednesday.

The Wheat Kings' win over the Raiders was also their sixth-straight win in a row, their second longest streak this season after winning eight-straight from March 24 to April 7. In a "normal" Western Hockey League season with playoffs, the Wheat Kings would be heading into the post-season with momentum and a dominant level of swagger to their game. Instead, they will look to eliminate the final contender for the division banner as soon as possible and claim the title of the best in the East division.

Schneider on Fire

Braden Schneider's goal last night was his second overtime winner in six nights after he helped his team sweep the season series against the ICE last Sunday with a slapshot from the point. The 19-year old defenceman has been every bit the dominant player he was expected to be after becoming a first-round New York Rangers draft pick back in October. His 23 points (5G-18A) is the fourth-highest among Wheat Kings and he's scored them while being the top shutdown man for Brandon. He's been penalized just four times and has been paired with four different Wheat Kings defencemen over the course of the 22 games. The Prince Albert native has quite simply done it all on the Wheat Kings' back end this season, dominating on both ends of the ice.

Youth Be Told

Rookies Nate Danielson and Brett Hyland connected for the game's first goal last night against the Raiders, Danielson finishing the game with three assists and the game's second star. Danielson and the other seven rookies on Brandon's roster have blended in nicely with the Wheat Kings' veteran group, contributing on a nightly basis and often skating with at least two first-year players together on Brandon's fourth line.

Wheat Kings Rookie Scoring

Nate Danielson 3G - 12A - 15 points - 22 Games Played

Brett Hyland 4G - 6A - 10 points - 21 Games Played

Tyson Zimmer 3G - 1A - 4 points - 15 Games Played

Rylen Roersma 1G - 1A - 2 points - 16 Games Played

Logen Hammett 1G - 3A - 4 points - 13 Games Played

Previous Meetings this Season

The Pats are the team who snapped Brandon's eight-game winning streak back on April 9th in overtime with a 2-1 win. Rookie forward Connor Bedard scored both of Regina's goals that evening before packing up and leaving the #SubwayWHLHub to play for Canadas U18 team in Texas. Bedard was every bit as advertised as the WHL's first exceptional status player in history, but Regina has stayed competitive in has absence winning their last three of five games since April 23.

Prior to the OT winner against the Wheaties, Brandon has beaten the Pats twice this season - once in regulation and once in overtime on a Nolan Ritchie winner.

April 9, 2021 - Wheat Kings 1 - 2 Regina

April 1, 2021 - Wheat Kings 7 - 2 Regina

March 20, 2021 - Wheat Kings 3 - 2 Regina
