Lone Star Brahmas News Release
Anton Santesson is the third Swedish born player on the Lone Star Brahmas roster joining veterans Johan Steen and Sebastian Vidmar. Santesson will be alongside Steen on the blueline while Vidmar will be playing up front.
Santesson and Vidmar were familiar with one another from their time playing juniors in Sweeden. The two had spent most of their time playing against each other with Santesson playing for Rogle and Vidmar with Malmo. Both were selected to represent the Skane District in the prestigous TV-Pucken Tournament in 2009-10. Santesson played a total of 127 games at the SuperElit level which is the pinnacle of junior hockey in Sweden.
Anton's English skills are still developing, so having Vidmar to turn to has been a blessing. "I think it helps me a lot," he said. "Sebastian can describe something when I don't understand. So that's good now in the beginning."
Santesson did have discussions with another team in the NAHL prior to communicating with the Brahmas. Again he turned to his old friend. "I'm friend with him since earlier so I talked to him about Brahmas and he have only good things to said." Once Santesson had communicated with Lone Star he said it just felt right and a good fit for him. He wanted to try something new and thought playing on the smaller ice would be fun.
While he has had limited time in the NAHL when he compares the game here with the game in Sweden, he said the NAHL is faster and more physical while the overall skill level in Sweden higher. Playing on the smaller ice in the US has required some adjustments for Santesson. "It's different to play, you don't have much space so you have to know before you get the puck what you are going to do with it."
Santesson and the Brahmas will be competing in the season opening NAHL Showcase Tournament in Blaine, MN September 17 - 20. Games will be live streamed on Fasthockey.com.
