Another pair of wins for Jets
October 21, 2004 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Fargo-Moorhead Jets News Release
An overtime victory on Sunday concluded another successful string of games for the Fargo-Moorhead Jets. Two wins, sandwiched around a loss, marked the Jets recent weekend stretch.
The Jets defeated the Helena Bighorns 7-4 on Friday October 15 and 5-4 in sudden death overtime on Sunday October 17. However, the Jets fell 2-1 to Bismarck on Saturday October 16. Each of the games were at the Carlson Coliseum, and ended a season-high five-game homestand.
"We played our best game of the season, and also our worst this past weekend" said head coach Todd Knott. "Of course, our overall result we can't complain about because we added two more wins and ended a good homestand positively."
Lance Malark (White Bear Lake, MN) and Phil Fox (Stillwater, MN) each scored three goals this weekend. Meanwhile, Kai Kantola (Raleigh, NC) and Chris Myhro (Eden Prairie, MN) had two tallies. Myhro also had two assists for four points in the three games, bringing his season total to 16.
Dan DiLeo (St. Louis, MO) earned both wins in net, while Andy Stricker (Mountain Lake Terrace, WA) made 36 saves in a tough-luck loss to Bismarck on Sat. Oct. 16.
The Jets opened the weekend with a 7-4 win over Helena as Fox and Myhro each had two goals. Morgan Cekalla (Little Falls, MN) also had a goal in the victory. The Jets broke open a 3-3 early third period tie with four straight goals to then cruise to a 7-4 victory.
However, when the Jets lost to Bismarck one night later, it marked the first -and thus far - only time the Jets have lost a game in regulation. The Bobcats capitalized on two defensive mistakes by the Jets in their own zone to take a 2-0 lead after two periods. Fox brought the Jets to within 2-1 late in the third period, but was unable to sustain any offensive pressure on Bismarck over the final five minutes and failed to tie the game.
"I hope the loss teaches the guys that having lapses can hurt your team, and that we can be beat. I hope, and believe, that our guys will learn from this" Knott added after the game.
The Jets did respond the next night over Helena as Kantola scored his first two goals in Junior A hockey, including the game winner in overtime. Myhro tied the game for the Jets late in the third period, when the Helena goaltender lost the puck at the side his own net, leaving the goal mouth unattended. This was the third time in franchise history the Jets have won in the overtime period, each of which came at home.

Jets Canvassing Campaign: As a way of reaching out to the community, the Fargo-Moorhead Jets have announced their first-ever canvassing campaign. The Jets will attempt to visit 1,000 area homes over five nights in late October on the Operation Hello Campaign.
Over the span of five days in late October, the Fargo-Moorhead Jets players will attempt to personally introduce themselves to 1,000 homes in the area.
"There is no better way to promote your team than to simply introduce yourself to your entire fan base," commented Jets' director of broadcasting/media relations Scott Montesano. "This way, we know for sure our name is getting out in the market."
Players will visit different areas of the community in the early evening hours, and will be wearing their jerseys. Anyone interested in having the Jets visit their particular community, is asked to call the office at (701) 235-2354.
"The key thing for people to realize is that we are not going to sell them anything when we come to the door. We are just saying hello" added Montesano.
The plan is for groups of four players to visit specific areas, and they will not have any time limit once they reach a house. Players will be more than willing to sign autographs, take pictures, and maybe even give a quick lesson on shooting skills.
The canvassing campaign is part of a lead-up to the Jets "Neighbor Night" scheduled for their November 14 home game versus Billings.
