Mahoning Valley Phantoms News Release

Blaine, Minnesota (Thursday, October 21, 2004) -- Tonight Aaron Rhyner and Anthony Canzoneri both had a goal and two assists to lead the Youngstown Phantoms Junior-A hockey club to a lopsided 6-1 victory over the Bay State Breakers at the NAHL Showcase Tournament in Minneapolis. It was the fourth straight win for Youngstown (5-3-0), which will play again the next two days as the 30-team tourney -- that also includes Eastern Junior Hockey League clubs -- continues. The Phantoms' schedule for the remainder of the tournament is:

Fri., Oct. 22 Youngstown vs. Walpole Junior Stars (EJHL) 1:30 p.m. (CST)

Sat., Oct. 23 Youngstown vs. Texarkana Bandits (NAHL) 12 Noon (CST)

Tonight the Phantoms kept the pressure on the opposition throughout the contest, out-shooting the EJHL's Breakers, 57-30. Rhyner and Evan Case scored in the first period and Chris Smith, Warren Byrne and Canzoneri added second-period tallies to extend the Youngstown lead to 5-0. Bay State (1-1-0) registered its only goal of the evening when Chris Margott found the net on a power play with nine minutes remaining in the second period. A goal by Marc Menzione of the Phantoms at 12:02 of the final stanza closed out the scoring.

Jerry Kuhn, who has been in goal for all five Youngstown victories this season, was strong again making 29 saves and improving his personal record to 5-2-0.

"We're always on a quest to put 60 minutes of good hockey together, and for the second day in a row, we did just that," Phantoms' Head Coach & General Manager Bob Mainhardt said. "Tonight we started strong, finished strong and everything else in between was strong. Our guys are really starting to mature."
