Burlington Bees News Release
BURLINGTON, Iowa - The Burlington Bees (24-28) ended the month of May on a high note by beating the Peoria Chiefs (23-31) 3-to-2 in a pitchers' duel. The Bees finished 13-16 and won their final game after Sean Jamieson lifted a seventh inning pitch over the leftfield wall.
The Bees received another good start from Drew Granier who pitched five scoreless and hitless innings to start the game. Once again, Granier wasn't razor sharp, but he was effective as always. The right-hander came into the game tied for the league lead with six wins this year, and had to battle to earn a win on Thursday night.
Granier pitched seven innings and only allowed four hits - three of which came in the sixth inning when the Chiefs scored two runs. But those were the only runs Granier allowed, despite walking four batters. The right-hander also struck out six batters and now leads the league 61 strikeouts. Granier (7-2) also leads the league with seven wins.
The Bees gave Granier a lead to work with after they scored with a two-out rally in the second inning. Eliezer Mesa hit a single into left and moved into scoring position after a balk. Ryan Pineda had two RBIs in Wednesday's win and earned another when he scored Mesa on a single to centerfield.
The Bees scored again when John Nester led off the fifth inning with a walk and scored on a sacrifice fly to rightfield by B.A. Vollmuth. Vollmuth leads the Bees with 35 RBIs and gave the Bees their 2-to-0 lead after five innings. But Granier allowed the Chiefs to score their only two runs in the top of the sixth and the game was tied 2-to-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Bees reclaimed the lead on a solo home run by Sean Jamieson. Jamieson's third home run of the season came with a 1-and-1 count and marked third time the Bees reclaimed a lead in the seventh inning or later during the home stand. Jamieson went 1-for-2 with one home run and two walks. Jamieson has walked six times in two games.
The Bees try to sweep the Chiefs in three games on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. The Chiefs swept the Bees in a four- game series earlier in May. For information on Bees baseball and promotions, call (319) 754-5705 or visit www. gobees.com.
