
Aguila's long ball not enough in 8-7 loss

DAYTON, OHIO - The South Bend Silver Hawks (27-27) carried a 7-5 lead into the ninth inning before losing to the Dayton Dragons 8-7 in the middle game of a three-game series at Fifth-Third Field. Joe Terry hit a walk-off RBI single up the middle in the ninth inning to send the Silver Hawks to their third straight loss.
The Silver Hawks are at the .500 mark for the first time since entering play at 8-8 on April 22.
D.J. Johnson (2-4) blew his third save of the season and got hit with the loss, allowing three earned runs on four hits without recording an out in the ninth inning. Mike Dennhardt (1-1) earned the win out of the bullpen for Dayton, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings.
Eight of nine Silver Hawks starters recorded at least one hit. Chris Ellison, Gerson Montilla, Roidany Aguila, Ryan Court and Bryan Henry each recorded two hits for the Silver Hawks who pounded out 13 hits. Aguila finished 2-for-4 and swatted his first home run of 2012.
John Pedrotty started for South Bend and got a no decision, surrendering five earned runs on eight hits over six innings. The left-hander struck out seven and has gone at least six innings in four of his last five starts. Pedrotty departed with the Silver Hawks leading 6-5.
Dragons starter Tanner Robles allowed six earned runs on a career-high 11 hits over 4.1 innings.
The Silver Hawks struck first in the second inning on a two-out RBI single from Henry. The Dragons took a 2-1 lead with two runs in the home half of the frame on a two-RBI single from Junior Arias, who was thrown out by Ellison trying to extend it to a double.
Aguila's home run to left-center tied the game 2-2 in the fourth inning.
The Hawks took the lead back in the fifth inning with four runs on five hits. Tom Belza and Montilla added RBI singles before Matt Helm doubled in a pair of runs to knock Robles from the game and extend the Silver Hawks lead to 6-2.
The Dragons cut the lead to 6-5 with a three-run bottom of the fifth inning. Kurtis Muller hit a solo home run, Steve Selsky tripled in a run and Sean Buckley cut the margin to one with an RBI single.
South Bend took a 7-5 lead on a sacrifice fly from Aguila in the seventh inning.
Seth Simmons tossed a scoreless seventh inning and Matt Sample worked a three-up, three-down eighth inning for the Silver Hawks.
The Silver Hawks and Dragons wrap up the series Friday night at Fifth-Third Field. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Jesse Darrah (4-2, 4.17) starts for South Bend and he will be opposed by righty Stalin Gerson (3-3, 4.12).
