Another Late Goal Downs Devils

Albany Devils News Release

ALBANY, NY -- The Albany Devils third-period comeback was spoiled by Chris Mueller's late goal, giving the Hartford Wolf Pack a 4-3 victory Sunday at Times Union Center. Mike Sislo netted a pair of goals and Paul Thompson also found the back of the net.

The Devils are now 22-20-4-5 overall, while the Wolf Pack improve to 28-15-4-3.

"Right now every team is fighting for points," Thompson said. "They are a team we have to try to catch. We just have to do a better job. We have to be ready to play to start."

Mueller finished with a goal and an assist as did Connor Allen and Ryan Bourque. Danny Kristo also accounted for a Hartford goal. Jeff Malcolm, who made 29 saves in a 5-2 win against Albany Saturday, made 22 saves to improve to 3-0-0-0.

The Spoiler

Trailing 3-1 late in the second period, the Devils turned the momentum in their favor with back-to-back goals. At 14:51 of the second, Thompson carried the puck into the zone and left it for Wohlberg. He dished back to Thompson, allowing him space to walk in and slip a shot between Malcolm's legs.

In the third, Whitney found Sislo in the slot at 10:57. Sislo, who netted three goals in two games against the Wolf Pack, picked the upper-right corner to tie the game.

However, Hartford had an answer with 3:47 remaining in regulation. Bourque setup Mueller on a rush and his shot beat Wedgewood waist high.

"I think in every game we have done good things, but we haven't done it for a long period of time," Sislo said. "We haven't put 60 minutes together and that is what it will take to win this time of year."

Sislo, who has five goals in five games, registered his 58th and 59th career goals, tying him with Tim Sestito for second on the franchise's all-time goals list. Thompson's tally was his team-leading 23rd of the season; he ranks second in the AHL.

Four For Four

During the first period, the Devils and Wolf Pack accounted for four goals in four minutes. First the Wolf Pack netted back-to-back goals within 13 seconds of each other. Kristo opened the scoring at 8:31 and Allen followed at 8:44.

Moments later, Mike Sislo scored for the Devils at 11:22. While crossing the blue line, Sislo and Zajac created a give-and-go play, which set Sislo up for a one-timer shot from the right face-off dot.

The Wolf Pack answered when Ryan Haggerty won a foot race, cut back and passed to Dallas Jackson at the point. Jackson ripped a shot that Bourque tipped at 12:37.

"It compounds the whole weekend," said Head Coach Rick Kowalsky. "We played well Friday, but didn't get the result. We had a lot of positives to build off of and started the way we wanted to last night in another teams building, but we laid down the second half of the game. Tonight we spot them another lead and fought our way back into it and to lose it late like that is a tough weekend."
