Another Big Offensive Performance Pushes Pilots Past DiamondDawgs

Newark Pilots News Release

The Newark Pilots (8-7) defeated the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs (6-8) by a final score of 12-4 on Saturday night at Colburn Park.

After setting a new franchise record for runs scored in a game with 19 versus the DiamondDawgs a week ago, the Pilots put together another strong offensive showing to bump their record one game over .500.

Every Newark batter scored at least one run, and eight of the nine finished with at least one hit as the Pilots scored 12 runs on 14 hits. Reigning PGCBL Player of the Week Joe Landi (Rhode Island) led Newark with three hits. Landi also stole three bases, scored twice, and drove in a pair of runs. Sean Osterman (St. John Fisher) paced Newark with three RBIs.

On the other hand, Mohawk Valley only could muster four runs on six hits. Tyler Heck (Union) finished the game 2-for-4. Hassan Evans (Herkimer County C.C.) scored a team-high two runs.

Newark exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third inning. With the bases loaded, Brent Langston (Delta State) drove in two runs with a single up the middle. Osterman cleared the bases later in the frame with a three-run double, and then scored on a base hit from Landi to put the Pilots up 6-0.

Mohawk Valley responded with three runs in the top of the fourth. After retiring the first two batters, a pair of errors by the Newark middle infielders extended the inning. Tom Valichka's (Young Harris) RBI triple highlighted the inning as the DiamondDawgs cut the deficit in half.

Already up 8-3 in the fifth, two straight walks loaded the bases before the third forced Landi home. Newark took a seven-run lead following a sacrifice fly from Josh Crowdus (Delta State).

Mohawk Valley starter Eddie Fitzpatrick (Brown) was replaced in the fifth. Fitzpatrick was tagged with his second loss of the season after allowing nine runs on 10 hits. He did punch out five batters via strikeout.

The bases were once again full for the Pilots following three consecutive singles in the bottom of the eighth. Tyler McDonald (Millersville) then scored from third on a passed ball to give Newark its 12-4 advantage.

Derek Dallas (UT-Dallas) earned his first win of the season for Newark. The starter hurled five innings, allowing three unearned runs while striking out four. Sean Elliot (University of Indianapolis), Andrew Tidwell (Saginaw Valley State) and Jimmy Wagner (Ithaca) combined for four relief innings and seven strikeouts.

The Pilots are on the road Sunday against the Albany Dutchman at 5:05 p.m. Mohawk Valley returns home to host the Watertown Wizards, also at 5:05 p.m.
