Anderson Stars Among USHL Defenseman

Waterloo, Iowa-Waterloo Black Hawks veteran Mikey Anderson is the United States Hockey League's Defenseman of the Week for the second time this season, the USHL announced on Monday.

The University of Minnesota-Duluth recruit is among the closely-scouted North American prospects who are candidates to be selected during the 2017 NHL Draft. Anderson's earlier Defenseman of the Week recognition came on October 10th.

During wins last weekend against the Bloomington Thunder and Omaha Lancers, Anderson notched a pair of assists in each game. In the process, he helped to set up each of Waterloo's three weekend power play goals. Anderson's four points during the two games equaled Kevin Charyszyn for top Hawks scoring honors; in fact, Anderson assisted on two of Charyszyn's three goals. Anderson was also +2.

A six-game sequence has helped to lift Anderson among the top five scoring defensemen in the league. Since February 11th, the 17-year-old has two goals and six assists. The spurt gives him 28 total points (four goals, 24 assists) in 42 games during the 2016/17 campaign. Anderson is also +22, which ties for fourth among USHL players at all positions.

Black Hawks players have now collectively claimed at least one of the league's weekly awards on four of the last five Mondays. Anderson joins Jake Ryczek, Nick Swaney, and Robbie Beydoun as Black Hawks who have won multiple USHL Player of the Week titles in 2016/17. In total, Waterloo has claimed 11 such awards.
