Anchors unable to take ahold of first place

Alexandria Blue Anchors News Release


St. Cloud, Minn. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors fell to the St. Cloud Rox Wednesday night by a score of 2-1 at Joe Faber Field. The loss puts the Anchors at 5-3 in the second half and 17-26 on the season.

The Blue Anchors were first on the board when they scored against Zach Pop in the first inning. Dane Hutcheon reached on an error and landed at third base after a groundout. A two-out knock off the bat of Ricky Sanchez drove in Hutcheon for a 1-0 lead.

In their half of the first, the Rox responded against Jake Mattys. Brett Pope singled with one out and stole second. He went to third on a base hit and a fielder's choice off the bat of Austin Athmann scored Pope to tie the game at one.

In the fourth, Athmann singled to start the frame and went to second on Lee Miller's one-out single. Liam Bedford reached on an error scoring Athmann and the Rox had a 2-1 advantage.

The top of the ninth brought one last rally for the Anchors but the left the bases loaded and fell 2-1.

Matthys (1-3) was the tough luck loser pitching six solid allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits and a walk while striking out one batter. Mitch Larson finished the ballgame with two scoreless innings.

Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Jake Mattys (SP) - The righty pitched his second-straight quality start. He took the loss but lowered his ERA on the season to 3.97.
