Erie Otters News Release
Erie, Pennsylvania - Erie Otters defenseman Jamie Drysdale was selected sixth overall by the Anaheim Ducks at the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, making him the highest selected Otters defenseman in the team's NHL Entry Draft history and highest player selected since 2015 when Connor McDavid and Dylan Strome went first and third overall, respectively.
Drysdale, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound defenseman, experienced a career year during his second OHL season with a near point-per-game performance with 47 points (9G-38A) in 49 games during the COVID-19 pandemic shortened 2019-20 campaign. The Toronto, Ontario native has experienced on-ice success in the OHL since the Otters drafted him fourth overall at the 2018 OHL Priority Selection and went on to set the Erie Otters rookie defenseman record for points in a season with 40 points (7G-33A) in 2018-19, surpassing current Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Travis Dermott's previous mark of 28 points. The 18-year-old Drysdale becomes the highest picked Otters defenseman at the NHL Draft since Carlo Colaiacovo was taken 17th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2001.
Drysdale's on-ice achievements continue internationally where he most recently helped Canada to a gold medal as an underage defenseman at the 2020 World Junior Championship. He also captained Canada's National Summer Under-18 Team at the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, guiding the group to a silver medal.
The accolades pile up year-after-year for Drysdale. During his time in the OHL he has been named to the OHL First All-Rookie Team and OHL First All-Star Team, a two-time OHL Scholastic Team member, a two-time Erie Otters Best Defenseman Award winner, and Erie Otters Rookie-of-the-Year and Team MVP award winner in 2019.
Since 1969, a total of 2,379 OHL players have been selected in the NHL Draft representing over 20% of all players chosen by clubs and a figure higher than any other league solidifying the OHL as the number one supplier of NHL talent.
