Newark Pilots News Release

The Amsterdam Mohawks (23-14) defeated the Newark Pilots (19-16) by a final score of 6-3 at Colburn Park on Thursday.

With the win, the Mohawks tied the two-game series with the Pilots, which began Wednesday night with a walk-off win for Newark.

Amsterdam took the lead in the first inning and held onto it throughout the remainder of the contest. In the first at bat of the game, Andrew Green (East Tennessee State) crushed his second homerun of the season over the wall in right field. Matt Mika (St. John Fisher) gave up two runs in the first, which was the only inning he pitched in his debut for the Pilots.

Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Newark cut the deficit to one run. Michael Bolling (Lewis) singled to right center field, then stole second. Matt Vera (San Joaquin Delta) drove in Bolling for the first run of the frame. Vera cut the Amsterdam lead to 3-2 after scoring from first on a RBI single in the next at bat.

The top of the eighth inning was cut short due to bad base running by the Mohawks. The trouble started as Brad Picha (Paris) stood on third with Josh Alexander (Utah) on second and Kody Ortman (NW Shoals C.C.) at plate.

After he singled, the Pilots originally had Ortman caught in a rundown. Ray Delvalle (Kentucky Wesleyan) made a heads-up play to catch Picha as he tried to trot home with Newark's defense distracted. After recording the 9-4-2-5-2 putout, catcher Adam Grace (Genesee C.C.) then threw out Ortman at first. In the next play, Alexander was thrown out at home by Newark right fielder Luke Swenson (UC Santa Barbara) to end the inning.

The Mohawks entered the ninth with a 3-2 lead. Whereas the Pilots came back from the same score with the walk-off win the night before, Amsterdam took control of the final inning to secure the win. Luke Maile (Kentucky) hit a two-run double to straightaway centerfield to give his team a four-run cushion.

The Pilots tagged on one run in the home half of the ninth, but were unable to spark another comeback win over the Mohawks. Bolling advanced to third after reaching on an error, then scored on a wild pitch.

Earning the win for Amsterdam was Brett Houseal (Marist). Houseal threw five full innings, allowing two runs and fanning four. Every Mohawk batter recorded at least one hit. Maile finished with one run on two hits and two RBI's.

Reliever Alex Flores (Ohlone) had the best performance of five Newark pitchers used. Flores pitched three scoreless innings, surrendering two hits and striking out one. Delvalle led the Pilots with two hits.

The Newark Pilots host the Cooperstown Hawkeyes on Friday for a doubleheader starting at 5:05 p.m. The Amsterdam Mohawks return home to face the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs at 7:05 p.m.
