Amerks Sign Defensemen Finley, Fienhage to AHL Contracts
October 4, 2011 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)... Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier announced today the Rochester Americans have signed defensemen Joe Finley and Corey Fienhage (fin-AH-gee) to American Hockey League (AHL) contracts.
Finley, 24, joins the Amerks after recording nine points (1+8) and 88 PIM in 35 combined games with the Hershey Bears (AHL) and South Carolina Stingrays (ECHL) last season. After notching one assist in seven games to begin the season with Hershey, the 6-foot-8, 260-pound blueliner finished the year in South Carolina, scoring one goal and assisting on seven others in 26 appearances. He also appeared in four postseason contests for the Stingrays.
A first-round pick (27th overall) of the Washington Capitals in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Finley played just 17 games for South Carolina in 2009-10 before a season-ending injury forced him to miss the remainder of his rookie campaign.
Prior to turning pro, the Edina, Minnesota, native played four seasons at the University of North Dakota (WCHA), where he amassed 35 points (7+28) and 303 PIM in 154 career games for the Fighting Sioux. A three-time WCHA All-Academic Team selection, Finley also led the team in plus/minus in back-to-back seasons and was named the WCHA's Defensive Player of the Week as a sophomore.
Fienhage enters his first full pro season in 2011-12 after capturing career-highs in goals (4), assists (10), points (14) and penalty minutes (96) in 70 games with the Kamloops Blazers (WHL) last season.
A native of Apple Valley, Minnesota, the 21-year-old also skated in four regular season games with the Portland Pirates (AHL) in 2010-11, including his pro debut against the Worcester Sharks on April 5, 2011.
Selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the third round (81st overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound rearguard also played two seasons at the University of North Dakota (WCHA), earning three points (1+2) and 56 PIM 39 games for the Fighting Sioux. Fienhage and Finley were teammates at UND during the 2008-09 season.
