Americans to Select Third-Overall in 2024 WHL Prospects Draft

March 27, 2024 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Tri-City Americans News Release

Kennewick, WA - The Western Hockey League conducted the 2024 WHL Draft Lottery Wednesday afternoon with the Prince Albert Raiders (via Seattle) winning the lottery. With that, the Americans first-round pick will drop from second to third overall.

2024 will mark the fourth time in the past five years the Americans have picked inside the top four of the draft. In 2020 they selected Lukas Dragicevic after seeing their pick drop from third to fourth overall, and in 2021 and 2022 the Americans didn't win the lottery but also didn't drop, allowing them to select Jordan Gavin and Jackson Smith second overall.

The Americans haven't drafted third overall in the WHL Draft since 2000 when they selected Ian McDonald, who spent his entire WHL career with the Americans recording 217 points (72-145-217) in 329 games.

The WHL also conducted the lottery for the 2024 U.S. Priority Draft Wednesday afternoon, with the Americans ending up with the fourth-overall selection. Each of the six teams that missed the 2024 WHL playoffs had an equal chance at winning the first-overall pick. The second round of the draft is determined by inverse order of the standings from the 2023-24 season, meaning the Americans will select fourth and 24th overall.

The U.S. Priority Draft is set for Wednesday, May 8 and the WHL Prospects Draft for Thursday, May 9.
