Americans Late Game Rally to Tie Falls Short in Shootout

Hidalgo, TEXAS - The Allen Americans and Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees faced off once again on Wednesday evening, in the second of their three game series this week. The game marked the sixth time the two teams have met thus far in the regular season where Allen holds the season series lead 4-1, the most recent being a decisive 6-1 Allen victory Sunday afternoon at the Allen Event Center.

The Americans struck first when Jarret Lukin notched his 10th goal of the season at 9:09 of the first period, Jason Deitsch and Brian McMillin contributed with assists on the goal. Play was up tempo for the two teams, who were each playing short handed due to several injuries on the rosters. The score remained 1-0 as the period concluded with the teams tied in shots on goal at 10-10.

Rio Grande answered back with a pair of unanswered goals in the second period to take the lead over the Americans 2-1 by periods end. Tomas Klempa scored first for the Bees, assisted by David Marshall to tie the game 1:00 into the 2nd period. Mark Magnowski then added the second marker of the night for the Bees giving them the lead over the Americans 2-1 with 4:23 remaining in the period, assisted went to Dan Gendur and Brandon Campos. The Bees outshot the Americans in the period 12-8 for a two period total of 22-18 in the Bees favor.

Past the midway point of the 3rd period, Mark Magnowski netted his second goal of the night for the Killer Bees to extend their lead to 3-1 at the 11:05 mark; assists were again credited to Dan Gendur and Brandon Campos. Jarret Lukin matched Magnowski's performance with his second of the night for Allen assisted by Tyler Ludwig, cutting the Bees lead to 3-2 with 3:12 remaining in regulation. With 1:45 left on the clock, Bruce Graham picked up a loose puck in front of a wide open Rio Grande Valley net and lit the lamp to knot the score at 3-3 in a dramatic late game comeback by the Americans to force overtime. Shots on goal were even once again at 10-10, with the overall total in favor of the Bees 32-28.

Overtime remained scoreless, forcing the game to a shootout. In the shootout, the Bees outscored the Americans 3-2 with goals scored by Jason Deitsch and Brian McMillin for the Americans and for the Bees, David Marshall, Aaron Lee and the game winner by Dan Gendur to give the Bees the 4-3 decision.

The Americans head back home to prepare for the third and final game of the current three game series with the Killer Bees on Friday night before the Christmas break. The game is scheduled for a 7:05PM start at the Allen Event Center.
