Americans Earn Fourth Straight OT Victory with 3-2 Win in Portland

December 29, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Tri-City Americans News Release

The Americans and Winterhawks matched up for the third straight game today. Once again, it was a heated and close game in Portland between the two U.S. Division rivals.

Each team was able to tally a power play goal in the first twenty minutes. Portland's Brendan De Jong opened scoring at 8:04 after Connor Bouchard took a slashing penalty. At 15:51 Riley Sawchuk and Reece Newkirk received roughing penalties after a heated interaction. An extra unsportsmanlike conduct penalty went to Portland's John Ludvig giving Tri-City a two minute power play. 2019 NHL Draft prospect Sasha Mutala capitalized with a deflection to tie the game for Tri-City.

Rookie Blake Stevenson was able to slip the puck past Winterhawk's goaltender Shane Farkas after a battle in front of the net to give the Americans their first lead at 6:08 in the second period. The period once again ended with a tie after Ryan Hughes scored on a breakaway for Portland at 16:38.

The third period went scoreless sending the Americans into overtime for the fourth straight game. Parker AuCoin was tonight's overtime hero scoring the game winning goal 1:19 into overtime, assisted by Sasha Mutala and Kyle Olson.

Final score: 3-2 Tri-City (OT)

Final shots: 35-32 Portland
