Tri-City Americans News Release
Prince George, B.C. - The Tri-City Americans first-round series with the Prince George Cougars is now a best of five as the Americans dropped a 2-1 overtime decision in game two Saturday night.
The opening minutes of the game saw the Cougars throwing pucks on net from all angles, but couldn't solve Tomas Suchanek who kept the Americans on even terms throughout the period.
Both teams had one power play in the opening period but couldn't capitalize as the two teams went into the intermission scoreless, with Prince George outshooting the Americans 14-9.
Tri-City opened the scoring just over seven minutes into the second period. Carter Savage threw the puck to the net from the left-wing boards and it was tipped by Adam Mechura. The puck went up in the air and floated over the head of Tyler Brennan before landing in the net to give the Americans a 1-0 lead.
That lead lasted for just 4:40 before the Cougars tied the game. A similar play to Mechura's goal, Chase Wheatcroft fired the puck on net from the right circle and it skipped toward the goal. Cole Dubinsky got the last touch on it to pull the Cougars even 12:02 into the second period.
The game remained 1-1 heading into the second intermission with the Cougars outshooting Tri-City 27-13.
The Americans killed off back-to-back penalties to start the third period before receiving a power play of their own at 7;35. They weren't able to take advantage of the man advantage, and would have two more power plays in the final 10 minutes of the game, including with 1:56 left in regulation.
On the final man advantage, it was the Cougars who had the better chances as they created a shorthanded two-on-one rush and a shorthanded breakaway, but weren't able to hit the net on either rush. Shots read 35-18 Cougars as the two teams went to overtime.
In the extra frame the Cougars were the only team to register a shot on net, winning the game on their third of overtime.
Jaxsen Wiebe gained the Tri-City line before skating down the slot and firing a wrist shot that deflected off an Americans stick and past the blocker of Suchanek, winning the game for the Cougars. Final shots were 38-18 Prince George.
The series now shifts to the Toyota Center for the next three games as the Americans host games three through five, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday night. Click here for playoff ticket information.
