Pats Look to Take 2-0 Series Lead vs. Blades
April 2, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Regina Pats News Release
Regina, Sask. - The Regina Pats play game two of their first round series against the Saskatoon Blades on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. inside the SaskTel Centre.
The Pats enter action with a 1-0 series lead following a convincing 6-1 victory over Saskatoon on Friday night. It was Connor Bedard (2G-1A) leading the way with a three point contest, while Stanislav Svozil (1G-1A) chipped in with two points and Drew Sim made 27 saves. Zackary Shantz, Riley Ginnell and Tye Spencer (EN) rounded out the scoring.
It was Shantz that got the Pats on the board roughly four minutes into the third, collecting his first career WHL goal. The Pats held a 2-0 lead after two periods of play. The closest the Blades would get in game would be 3-1 deficit thanks to a tally from Lukas Hansen in the third. Bedard, Svozil and Spencer would later put the game out of reach. Austin Elliot would allow five goals on 24 shots in the loss.
The final shots were 28-25 for the Blades but 13-5 for the Pats in the third. Drew Sim turned aside all 10 shots that he faced in the first and all 13 shots that he saw in the second frame. The Pats did not record a power play in game one, but went a perfect 2-2 on the penalty kill.
It's the Pats first game one series victory since March 24, 2017 (5-2 W vs. CGY). The Pats lost the opening game of each of their next three series during the 2017 playoffs where Regina reached the league final.
Meanwhile, the Blades dropped their opening game of the first round on April 22, 2022, falling 5-1 to the Moose Jaw Warriors before dropping that series in five games.
