American Hockey League Announces Relocation

January 29, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Bridgeport Islanders News Release

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The American Hockey League announced today that the league will relocate five teams to California at the conclusion of the 2014-15 season.

Three Eastern Conference teams will be involved in the move, as the Manchester Monarchs (Ontario), Norfolk Admirals (San Diego) and Worcester Sharks (San Jose) will all head to the West Coast to move closer to their National Hockey League franchises.

This move will provide logistical stability to the NHL's West Coast partners, as all three Eastern teams will now be located in the same city or just outside the cities of their affiliate.

"After today's announcement, the AHL truly reflects the geographical make-up of the NHL," Sound Tigers President Howard Saffan said. "While we are losing three great partners in Manchester, Norfolk and Worcester, we fully understand the importance of being close to your parent club."

The move will also see two Western Conference teams change locales, as the Oklahoma City Barons will ship out to Bakersfield and the Adirondack Flames will move to Stockton, the current home of the Islanders East Coast Hockey League affiliate, the Stockton Thunder.
