(Bridgeport, Conn. - May 7, 2014) - The American Cancer Society will be turning The Ballpark at Harbor Yard purple in an effort to spread cancer awareness and benefit the Relay For Life at the Bridgeport Bluefish game on May 16, 2014 beginning at 7:05pm. Proceeds from pre-purchased ticket sales will benefit the life-saving mission of the American Cancer Society and the Relay For Life of Stratford. The public is encouraged to wear purple and players will be sporting purple too in honor of Relay For Life.

"As a cancer survivor I know how important of a role that the Relay for Life plays in the lives of so many," say Bluefish general manager Ken Shepard. "The Relay for Life of Stratford partnership with the Bluefish is a perfect match of two organizations committed to helping those in need. Everyone's life has been impacted by the affect of cancer in some way. The Bridgeport Bluefish want to do their part to help encourage those fighting the battle as well as help raise funds to find cures."

At the end of the game the night will be brightened by the glow of candles illuminated in bags called luminaria, each bearing the name of someone who has battled cancer. Some celebrate cancer survivors, while others help us honor and remember those gone too soon. All luminaria bags represent someone special who has been profoundly affected by cancer and the family and friends who continue to fight back in their honor. Luminaria will be lit at along the field after the game. For a donation of $10, anyone desiring to honor or remember someone is able to purchase a luminaria bag at the Team Store.

"It is a beautiful sight when all the bags with candles are illuminated around the track at Relay For Life and will be just as beautiful lining the field," said Gillian Clark, Specialist for Relay For Life with the American Cancer Society. "The Luminaria Ceremony is a moving way to celebrate what cancer survivors have overcome, while motivating the community to continue to fight the disease that claims too many lives."

Dollars raised through Relay For Life enable the Society to offer free programs and services that help people fight cancer with courage and optimism, while it provides day-to-day help, emotional support, and 24-hour information to help ease the cancer experience. Additionally, Relay contributions provide the Society with much-needed dollars to fund groundbreaking cancer research, educate people about the importance of cancer prevention and early detection and advocate for meaningful public health policies that benefit the community.

Please use the ticket code "RELAY" when purchasing your tickets to benefit the American Cancer Society and the Relay For Life of Stratford. For more information about Relay For Life or the American Cancer Society please visit us at www.cancer.org or call us day or night at 1-800-227-2345.
