Ambrosio, Rafkin Set for World U-17 Hockey Challenge
Kearney, NE. - Tri-City Storm forward Colby Ambrosio and defenseman Ruben Rafkin are set to represent their countries in the 2018 World Under 17 Hockey Challenge in the towns of Saint John & Quispamsis, New Brunswick. Pre-tournament play gets underway tonight, with the tournament set to begin on Saturday. The event will run from November 3rd to November 10th, and will serve as an international showcase of some of the best young hockey talent in the world.
Storm defenseman Ruben Rafkin will represent Team Finland, while forward Colby Ambrosio will skate for Team Canada (White). The tournament is comprised of eight teams from six countries; USA, Canada, Russia, Finland, Sweden, and the Czech Republic. Canada will field three teams in the event; Team Canada (Red), Team Canada (Black), and Team Canada (White). Since its inception in 1986, the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge has seen over 1,700 alumni go on to be drafted in the NHL Draft. 23 of the 31 1st Round Draft picks at the 2018 NHL Draft in Dallas, TX were alumni of the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge.
Ruben Rafkin, 16, of Turku, Finland has skated in nine games for the Storm during the 2018-2019 regular season. He scored his 1st career goal in Tri-City's 3-0 shutout of Des Moines in the home opener on October 12th. Rafkin has represented Finland in international play multiple times, and was named the Top Defenseman at the 2018 U16 Four Nations tournament in Umea, Sweden. Tri-City signed Rafkin to a tender agreement on January 5th. Rafkin previously announced a commitment to play college hockey for the University of Denver.
Colby Ambrosio, 16, of Welland, Ontario has scored three goals and recorded three assists through ten career games with the Storm. Ambrosio scored two power play goals and was named the 1st Star of the Game in Tri-City's 6-2 defeat of Des Moines on October 20th. He also scored in back to back shootout victories for the Storm against rivals Omaha & Lincoln on October 26th & 27th. Ambrosio was signed to a tender agreement on April 14th, and is in his first season with the Storm. Ambrosio previously announced a commitment to play college hockey for Boston College.
