Ambassadors Sweep Doubleheader from Rox

June 4, 2003 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Allentown Ambassadors News Release

The Allentown Ambassadors ended the Brockton Rox's six game winning streak and won the team's third series in a row by sweeping the Rox in a doubleheader Wednesday night at Bicentennial Park.

The Ambassadors won the first game behind a strong complete game from John Dillinger 7-1. Dillinger tied an Ambassador record with 11 strikeouts in the seven inning game, giving up only one run on two hits.

The Ambassador hitters had no problem with Rodney Allen, who had control problems, walking seven, one intentionally, and hitting a batter. The Ambassadors scored one in the bottom of the first, then added three more in the second, with Ender Gonzalez's two-run home run the capping blow. It was Gonzalez's first home run of the season. The Ambassadors closed out the scoring in the fourth scoring three more, with Vic Davilla driving in Gonzalez with a double. Ryan Bordenick followed with a walk, and then Dan Singletary reached on a two-base error by Rox right-fielder Willie Edwards, scoring Davilla and Bordenick.

Game two was a pitcher's duel for four and a half innings, as Ambassador starter Nolan Fry and Rox starter Scott Martin matched each other with scoreless innings. But in the bottom of the fifth, the Ambassadors broke through with three runs. Singletary led off the inning with a walk, then Greg Schmidt tripled him home after a Brian Macchi sacrifice bunt. Kevin Moore followed with a walk, and then Chris Hafich successfully executed a suicide squeeze to score Schmidt. It was the Ambassadors' third successful suicide squeeze of the season. Julio Acosta finished the scoring off with an RBI double.

The Ambassadors tacked on an insurance run in the sixth, and held off a Brockton rally in the top of the seventh to preserve a 4-2 victory. The Rox got the tying run on first base in the ninth, but Mike Landry grounded out to end the game. Nolan Fry got the win, his second, pitching five scoreless innings, walking one and striking out two. Scott Martin took his first loss of the season. Wade Clark got one out for the save, his second.

The Ambassadors were hit by the injury bug in both games. In game one, Jorge Diaz left the game after his first at-bat in the first with a rib-muscle strain. The extent of the injury is not known at this time. In the second game, Schuyler Doakes cramped up and had to leave the game, and then Ender Gonzalez tweaked his hamstring trying to make a play at the second base bag. He is day-to-day. The victories improve the Ambassadors' record to 6-4, while the Rox drop to 9-3. The Ambassadors now embark on a seven game road trip, starting with four in Berkshire over the weekend.
