Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, NJ, June 4-The Newark Bears announced today that outfielder Michael Coleman has been activated from the team's suspended list and will be in uniform this evening when the Bears host the Somerset Patriots at Riverfront Stadium at 7:05 PM.

Coleman, who has played in the major leagues with the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees, attended spring training with the Bears before signing with Reynosa in Mexico. The Bears subsequently placed Coleman on their suspended list and retained his rights.

"We are very happy that Michael has returned to the Bears," said Newark general manager Chris Bryan. "He brings valuable experience to our team; and he adds a proven bat to the middle of our lineup."

Coleman, 27, spent part of the 1997 and 1999 seasons with the Red Sox and part of 2001 with the Yankees. All told he has 67 major league at-bats with 1 home run and 9 RBI.

In 1999 Coleman was an International League All Star while playing for triple-A Pawtucket. That season he smacked a career-high 30 home runs to go along with 29 doubles and a career-best 74 runs-batted-in.

Last year Coleman appeared in 65 games with Pawtucket, hitting 9 home runs and driving in 22 runs. After being released by the Red Sox organization Coleman signed with Elmira in the Northern League and batted .361 with 5 home runs and 15 RBI in 23 games.
