Ambassadors Split Doubleheader with New Jersey
June 23, 2003 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Allentown Ambassadors News Release
The Allentown Ambassadors split a doubleheader with the New Jersey Jackals, losing the first game 4-1 and winning the second 3-2.
The first game was a continuation of the game between the two teams that was postponed last Thursday night in Allentown due to rain. The game picked back up in the top of the fifth inning with two out and a 0-1 count on Chris Rowan. The Jackals were leading 3-0 on the strength of a run in the top of the second, third and fourth innings. Nolan Fry started the game for the Ambassadors and continued to pitch in New Jersey. He pitched well, giving up only one more run, but the Ambassadors were unable to mount enough offense off John Sneed, who came in to pitch for the Jackals at the resumption of play, and Matt Powell. The Ambassadors did score one run in the ninth inning and brought the tying run to the plate, but Marlon Roche grounded out to end the game.
The second game was also a pitcher's duel. The Ambassadors got a run in the top of the first off Aaron Myers when Diaz doubled and then Ender Gonzalez singled. With runners at the corners and no one out, Roche grounded into a double play scoring Diaz.
That would be all until the fifth inning, when the Jackals struck for two off John Dillinger. Carlos Pagan doubled to lead off the inning, then Chris Rowan singled. With runners at second and third, Keith Maxwell flied out to right field and Dan Singletary cut down Pagan trying to score at the plate. Ryan Bordenick injured his right ankle on the collision at the plate with Pagan during the play. With two out, John Anderson singled home Rowan, stole second, and was balked to third. He scored on a Craig Conway single. The Jackals loaded the bases, but Travis Bailey flied out to left to end the inning.
The Ambassadors tied the game in the sixth. Marlon Roche singled to lead off the inning, then Vic Davilla flied out. Julio Acosta pinch hit for Bordenick and singled to left. After Brian Macchi popped out, Dan Singletary doubled down the left field line, scoring Schuyler Doakes, who had pinch ran for Roche. Ben Grezlovski relieved Myers and got Greg Schmidt to strike out to end the inning. In the seventh, the Ambassadors took the lead. Cedrick Harris was hit by a pitch to begin the inning, then Diaz bunted him to second. Ender Gonzalez then hit a fly ball into the right field corner that Travis Bailey made a great leaping catch on, but his throw back into the infield was a bit casual and into the middle of the diamond. Ambassador manager Ed Ott was waiving Harris around all the way and he scored easily on the throwing error.
The Jackals made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with Bailey up again, but again Dillinger got him, this time a pop-out to Acosta to end the game.
The split makes the Ambassador record 12-14 this season while New Jersey is now 18-12, still four games ahead of the Ambassadors in the standings. John Dillinger got his fourth win of the season, Grezlovski took his first loss. Diaz was 2-3 with a single, double, run scored, stolen base and a sacrifice. The two teams go at it again tomorrow night in New Jersey, game time is 7:05.
