July 2, 2003 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Allentown Ambassadors News Release
John Dillinger pitched a complete game and the Ambassadors had 14 hits, defeating Quebec les Capitales 7-3 Wednesday night in Allentown.
Quebec scored first in the top of the second, with John Ballon scoring on a Asdrupal Oropeza sacrifice fly. But the Ambassadors would respond in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs off Quebec starter Jordy Alexander. Greg Schmidt doubled with one out, followed by a Kevin Moore single. With runners at the corners, Julio Acosta doubled to left, driving in Schmidt. A Schuyler Doakes sacrifice fly brought in Moore, then Cedrick Harris singled home Acosta.
The Ambassadors would score three more in the bottom of the fifth to chase Alexander out of the game. Doakes began the inning with a bunt base hit, then was sacrificed to second by Harris. Diaz popped out, then four straight singles from Ender Gonzalez, Vic Davilla, Brian Macchi, and Schmidt drove in three, all with two out.
Quebec drew a run closed in the sixth, but the Ambassadors tacked a run on in the bottom of the seventh to make it 7-2. A Carlos Rodriguez solo home run, his league leading thirteenth, in the eighth brought Quebec to within four, but Dillinger retired the last four batters to end the game.
Dillinger finished with three runs on seven hits in nine innings. He struck out eight and walked three to collect his fifth win of the season. Alexander took his league leading sixth loss. Macchi, Moore, Acosta, and Doakes all had two his. Macchi had two RBI and a double. Carlos Rodriguez was 3-3 with a run scored, a double, a home run and a walk in the losing effort.
The win pushes the Ambassador's record to 15-20, while Quebec falls to 17-22. The Ambassadors took two of three in the series from Quebec. Allentown will travel to Bangor, Maine tomorrow and take on the Lumberjacks in three doubleheaders over the weekend.
