
Five Bears Selected for Atlantic League All-Star Game

NEWARK, NJ, July 2-Five members of the Newark Bears baseball team have been selected to play in the 2003 Atlantic League All Star Game, it was announced today by the league's office. The game itself will take place on Wednesday July 9th at Holman Stadium in Nashua, NH.
Bears outfielders Rickey Henderson, Wil Quintana and Danny Clyburn were all voted into the starting lineup for the Atlantic League south division team as was designated hitter Michael Coleman. Right-handed pitcher Matt Wagner of the Bears was also selected to play in the game.
In addition, Henderson, Quintana and Clyburn will represent the south squad in the pre-game Home Run Derby.
"I am thrilled that so many of our players will be representing the Newark Bears in the Atlantic League All Star Game," said Bears Vice-President and General Manager Chris Bryan. "All five players have had terrific first halves to the season and are deserving of this honor."
Henderson, who has played in 10 Major League Baseball All Star Games in his Hall-of-Fame career, is currently leading the Atlantic League with a .370 batting average. He also has hit 7 home runs and driven in 29 runs to go along with 15 doubles, 40 walks and a .511 on-base percentage.
Quintana, who is making his second straight appearance in the Atlantic League All Star Game, leads the league with 47 runs-batted-in. He also ranks 2nd in the league with 14 home runs and is batting .278.
Clyburn has 11 home runs (tied for 4th in the league) and 36 RBI (tied for 6th in the league); while Coleman is batting .322 with 8 home runs and 33 RBI, having played in only 25 games so far this season.
Wagner, who like Henderson, Clyburn and Coleman has played in the Major Leagues, is 6-2 with a 2.61 ERA in 11 starts this year. He ranks 3rd in the league in ERA and innings pitched (76) and tied for fourth in victories.
