Alvarez Baffles Mavs Hitters, Sixers Win 4-1

Inland Empire 66ers News Release

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Mario Alvarez shut down the High Desert lineup for eight scoreless innings and the 66ers offense put up four runs to ensure a 4-1 victory Friday night in front of 5,524 at Arrowhead Credit Union Park.

Alvarez (5-6, 4.45) surrendered 5 hits with 4 strikeouts and didn't walk a batter over his eight sterling innings of work to pick up the win.

Inland Empire did most of its damage in the third against Mauricio Robles. Alex Garabedian led off the inning with a line shot that just cleared the fence in left, his third homer in four games. After Doug Mientkiewicz reached on a walk and moved to third on a single by Elian Herrera, Scott Van Slyke smacked his 41st double of the season to center field to bring in both Mientkiewicz and Herrera for a 3-0 lead.

The Sixers (56-75) added an insurance run in the eighth against Stephen Penney when Van Slyke mashed a majestic homer to left field onto Home Run Hill. Van Slyke finished the night 2-for-4 with a run scored and 3 RBI. He is now just five runs batted in short of becoming the first 66er to have at least 20 homers, 40 doubles, and 100 RBIs in a season.

The Mavs (78-53) staged a thrilling comeback attempt in the ninth. After Joe Torres struck out Jeffrey Dominguez, he walked Tyson Gillies, and gave up back-to-back singles to Edilio Colina and Jamie McOwen to load the bases. Marcel Prado replaced Torres to face pinch-hitter Alex Liddi and coaxed an RBI groundout. Then, with Carlos Peguero called on to pinch hit for Kuo Hui Lo, David Pfeiffer relieved Prado and got Peguero to fly out to left to end the ballgame and pick up a save.

Dodger infielder Mientkiewicz once again batted leadoff as the designated hitter in his second game with Inland Empire. Mientkiewicz was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

Robles (2-2, 2.96) allowed 3 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5 over 7 innings for the loss.

The 66ers continue their four-game series with High Desert Saturday at 7:05 as RHP Josh Wall (3-8, 6.24) squares off against RHP Jake Wild (6-7, 4.18). Following the ballgame Saturday night will be the final fireworks show of the season presented by AT&T Yellowpages. Tickets are available at www.66ers.com or at the 66ers box office, located at 280 South E Street in San Bernardino. For more information, give the 66ers a call at (909) 888-9922.
