Oseguera's Complete Game Shutout Lifts Giants To Win

August 28, 2009 - California League (CalL1)
San Jose Giants News Release

Paul Oseguera struck out a career-high 15 in a complete-game, three-hit shutout of the Lancaster JetHawks leading the San Jose Giants to a 4-0 victory on Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series at Municipal Stadium. Oseguera retired 27 out of the 30 batters that he faced and became the first San Jose pitcher to throw a complete game since July of 2007. Darren Ford and C.J. Ziegler each blasted home runs as the Giants (42-18) maintained a nine-game lead in the second half North Division race with just 10 to play in the regular season.

Oseguera (5-7) came within one strikeout of matching the San Jose Giants single-game record as the left-hander fanned at least one batter in all nine innings of the contest. Oseguera at one point retired 16 consecutive JetHawks hitters over the first through the sixth innings, did not walk anyone and threw 103 pitches overall in his dominant performance.

Ford (2-for-4, HR, RBI), Roger Kieschnick (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) and Conor Gillaspie (2-for-4, RBI) each finished with multi-hit games at the plate to lead the Giants offensively. San Jose out-hit Lancaster by a 9-3 margin.

The Giants quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead after scoring three times in the bottom of the first inning against JetHawks starting pitcher Chris Hicks. Ford began the frame with a solo home run to deep left center field - his eighth homer of the season. Two batters later, Thomas Neal drew a walk before Kieschnick slammed an RBI double off the fence in right center. Gillaspie then stepped to the plate and singled sharply into right field plating Kieschnick for the third run of the inning.

San Jose's final run of the night came in the bottom of the fourth when Ziegler hammered a one-out, solo homer to deep left center.

Oseguera surrendered a two-out single to Brandon Barnes in the top of the first inning and then didn't allow another hitter to reach base until Ebert Rosario's single to lead off the seventh. The Giants starter struck out the side in the second, fourth and fifth innings while also logging one punchout each in the third and sixth frames. After Rosario's leadoff single in the seventh, Oseguera struck out Barnes, induced Kody Clemens to fly out and then retired Jon Gaston on a ground out to first.

Oseguera struck out one more hitter in a perfect top of the eighth and after a groundout off the bat of Andy Simunic started the ninth, J.B. Shuck reached on an infield single to put a runner on first. Oseguera though followed by striking out Rosario before Barnes grounded out to third on a diving play made by Gillaspie to end the game.

Oseguera was the last Giants pitcher to throw a complete game when he went the distance in a losing effort at Modesto on July 5, 2007. The 15 strikeouts shattered his previous career-high of 10 set earlier this season while pitching for the Augusta GreenJackets.

Hicks (9-11) suffered the loss for the JetHawks after surrendering four runs (all earned) on seven hits over five innings. Hicks, who has allowed a California League-high 21 home runs this season, walked two and struck out five.

Thursday's attendance was 3,293 pushing the Giants season mark over 200,000 for the first time in franchise history. San Jose's total home attendance this season is 201,461.
