Alumni Spotlight: Team Tokarski
August 25, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release
The Spokane Chiefs' 2022 training camp will feature 82 players and prospects divided into four teams, each named after notable Chiefs alumni. Two goaltenders and two defensemen were chosen as the teams' namesakes in an effort to recognize current Chiefs Mason Beaupit and Graham Sward after they were selected in the 2022 NHL Draft, with Beaupit going to the San Jose Sharks (4th round, 108th overall) and Sward going to the Nashville Predators (5th round, 146th overall).
The third team is named after former Spokane Chiefs goaltender Dustin Tokarski, who played 129 games (2.18 GAA; .925 SV%) with the team from 2006-09 including Spokane's Memorial Cup Championship season in 2007-08. Among the honors he received in that championship year were CHL Goaltender of the Week (3-time), WHL Best Save Percentage (.922), CHL Memorial Cup Most Outstanding Goaltender, CHL Memorial Cup All-Star Team and CHL Memorial Cup Most Valuable Player (Stafford Smythe Trophy).
After three years in net for the Chiefs, Tokarski left his mark all over the franchise's record book:
1st - most career shutouts (15)
2nd - most career wins (77)
3rd - most career saves (3,341)
1st - single-season GAA (1.97 in 2008-09)
1st - single-season SV% (.937 in 2008-09)
Most consecutive wins in a single season (11; Dec. 3 - Jan. 31, 2008-09 and Oct. 13 - Dec. 12, 2007-08)
Most shutouts in a single season (7 in 2008-09)
Tokarski was a wall for Spokane in their 2008 WHL Playoff run, posting a 1.38 GAA and .944 SV% in 21 games (16-2-3-0) including three shutouts. In the team's Memorial Cup final, Tokarski made 53 saves and earned MVP honors after going 4-0 (1.72 GAA; .953 SV%).
In his final season as a Chief, Tokarski was named to the WHL (West) Second All-Star Team after posting the league's best GAA (1.97) and best SV% (.937).
Tokarski was one of two goaltenders named to the Spokane Chiefs' initial list of Top 25 Chiefs in 25 Years during the organization's 25th anniversary celebration in 2010.
A Saskatchewan native, Tokarski is also a World Junior Championship gold medalist with Team Canada (2008-09).
After he was selected 122nd overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2008 NHL Draft, Tokarski has been a two-time AHL Calder Cup Champion - once with the Norfolk Admirals in 2011-12 and once with the Charlotte Checkers in 2018-19. To date, he has played 76 career NHL games between the Lightning, the Montreal Canadiens, the Anaheim Ducks and the Buffalo Sabres. Tokarski was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins this offseason and is entering his 14th season of professional hockey.
