Altoona Beats Sens to Knot Series

Three two-out runs in the fifth inning proved to be the difference as the Altoona Curve beat the Harrisburg Senators 6-4 on Thursday evening, in game 2 of the first-round playoff series between the two teams.  Altoona's win evens the best-of-five series at one game apiece, with games three and four scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Metro Bank Park.

The game was tied 3-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth, thanks to two runs from the Sens in the top of the inning, but the Curve quickly struck back against relief pitcher Adrian Alaniz (0-1).  A single and an error put Chase d'Arnaud on second base to begin the inning, and a hit-by-pitch put two men on with just one out.  Alaniz induced a Matt Hague pop-out for the second out, but Hector Gimenez doubled in d'Arnaud to give the Curve a 4-3 lead.  After an Alaniz wild pitch brought in Jordy Mercer, Andrew Lambo made it back-to-back doubles, driving in Gimenez for the third and final run of the inning.  The Senators scored a run in the top of the seventh inning, as Josh Johnson tripled and then scored on a Jesus Valdez groundout, but could not plate another run.

The Senators had the first lead in the ballgame, as Johnson scored an unearned run in the first inning to put them in front.  He scored from second base on a Chris Marrero groundout, thanks in part to a throwing error by Chase d'Arnaud.  The Curve tied it up in the second, as Matt Hague doubled to lead off the inning, then advanced on a fly-out and scored on a Lambo groundout to make it 1-1.  Altoona scored two in the bottom of the fourth before the Senators tied it right back up again with two in the fifth off of Curve starter Jeff Locke.  Marrero singled in Stephen Lombardozzi for the first run, and then scored himself on a wild pitch by reliever Derek Hankins.  Both runs were charged to Locke.

Hankins (1-0) ended up throwing three and a third innings, allowing just one run, and picking up the win.  Alaniz pitched just the fifth for the Sens, and took the loss.  Daniel Moskos worked a scoreless ninth, and got his first playoff save for the Curve.  The Senators outhit Altoona 10-7 in the contest, getting two hits apiece from Johnson, Marrero, and catcher Devin Ivany.  Lombardozzi, Valdez, Ofilio Castro, and starting pitcher Aaron Thompson each had one hit.  Thompson gave up three runs in his four innings of work.

The Western Division championship series now heads to Harrisburg, for games three and four at Metro Bank Park.  Game three is a 7 PM start, while game four begins at 4 PM.  Right-hander Ryan Tatusko (3-1, 1.72) makes the start on the mound for the Senators in game three, against LHP Justin Wilson (11-8, 3.09) of the Curve.  Radio coverage of that game begins at 6:45, on 1460 AM The Ticket and www.senatorsbaseball.com.
